People and Their Pets

People are far more likely to take better care of their pets than themselves. This is based on the idea that for the most part, we are designed to be the kinder, gentler, more loving, and compassionate life form on this planet.

While our compassion for our fellow man may have faded, our relationship with our pets continues to grow. Many of us will sacrifice all to benefit those in our lives who love us unconditionally. When someone is on the down and out, the last morsels of food, will be given to your pet(s).

If your pet requires a special diet or medication, you are more likely to see to your pet’s needs before your own.

When your pet is in need of life-saving treatment, procedure, or surgery, you may find yourself pulling out your credit card, taking out a loan, visiting the local pawn shop, selling off personal belongings, anything that you might do for anyone else that you love dearly.

If given the choice between socializing with friends, family, or even keeping your job or giving up your pet, the vast majority would choose the pet over almost anything else, even one’s spouse.

Your Animals Are Healthier Than You

There is a very peculiar trend that you might not notice that is taking place in veterinary sciences, which results in better treatment of your animals and pets than you get. And it all starts with the basic diet. If you look at the nutritional label of your pet food and compare it to the nutritional label on a box of cereal or even baby formula, you may be shocked to realize that

Your Pet Has a Better Diet Than You

Most of us don’t pay much attention to what we eat, and for the vast majority of us, those who shop at supermarkets and frequent restaurants or fast food establishments, there’s not much nutritional value in the food items we have access to.

But pet food companies are putting forth the effort to see that our animals have access to the best nutrients to support good health and long life.

Your Pets Get Better Health Care

Health care for animals is quite different than you might see in medical care for humans. Veterinarians whose patients are primarily livestock are tasked with keeping the animals they’re responsible for as healthy as possible for as long as possible for as little as possible to see that the owners receive a good return on their investment.

So, there is a huge emphasis on preventative care for animals (which includes an improved diet, including vitamins and minerals) because an expensive surgery is not practical for livestock (though it might be a more viable option for your pet).

This is in sharp contrast to your doctor, who was taught in medical school to sell prescriptions and recommend expensive procedures and surgeries. This is not a practical approach for a veterinarian.

For example, you might go to your doctor and your recommended treatment for a painful hip may include a prescription medication to relieve the pain and a surgical approach including hip replacement, which would be covered by your health care insurance. While the veterinarian would be tasked with finding alternative (inexpensive) methods to repair and rebuild the hip function of his or her patient.

I gravitate to health care professionals who are more akin to the practices of the veterinarian, like natural and homeopathic preventive care, but also have a cooperative MD who understands my perspective on taking the lead on my own healthy maintenance.

Unfortunately, even with the best of care, our pets, who we can care for as deeply (or more deeply according to recent studies) than our fellow humans, have a more limited lifespan.

And while you may sacrifice all for your favorite dog or cat, a friend of mine who works for the State to follow up with the elderly who have become incommunicado says that it makes a difference if you pass away in your home with a cat or a dog. He says that if your pet is a dog, there is a high likelihood that your dog will die also from starvation. Ahh… man’s best friend.

Your cat, on the other hand, might be more prone to survive, at your expense.

Do we care?

We don’t really, because we love our pets more than anything or anyone else and are far more likely to take better care of their pets than ourselves.

You and Your Dog Inside

They say a dog is man’s best friend. That’s probably because in many ways there is a part of us that is not dissimilar to a dog. There is you and your dog inside of you. There is a higher version of yourself which is more evolved than your dog, and there is that base part of you and your dog inside.

For the moment, let’s refer to the dog part of you as Lassie. Lassie, not unlike other animals, is more concerned with being content and avoiding pain. Desiring the basic necessities of life such as food and shelter, mating and forming relationships with others.

Lassie has a natural tendency to want to care for others, and have fun, but can also experience overwhelming feelings, especially if the dog inside of you has suffered some abuse in the past. Lassie can be cuddly one minute, and in a second, when triggered, can be defensive and fierce, or turn and run away from anything which perceptually might cause harm.

Then there is that more intellectually evolved thinking part of you which is very imaginatively creative with the ability to be compassionate, reason, analyze, deduce, dream, project, and interact with others using language and higher levels of communication. Let’s call this part of you, Charlie.

Being inside the same body, Lassie and Charlie can face many challenges in trying to navigate life both as you and the dog inside of you.

Lassie is highly adaptive and is prone to change when faced with new circumstances in an effort to “get along” while Charlie will over-analyze just about anything, and lugs around an incredible (almost never-ending) filing system which hinders our ability to move on.

Lassie can easily sleep soundly when it is time to rest, while Charlie can stay up all night wondering, “What could happen if…” imagining and running all types of scenarios through the mind, creating new ideas, and fictitious threats and dangerous situations which have no relevancy in real life.

Charlie’s ability to be imaginative and creative is a gift which leads to problem-solving, miraculous inventions and advances in the sciences, but in concert with Lassie can cause us to become overwhelmed by emotional fear, which is a slippery slope when we exercise a good portion of Charlie’s skills in fear, leading to fear, anxiety, and depression.

This can create a virtual never-ending cycle of anxiety which can drain the resources of our entire biological system, weakening our immune system, making us more susceptible to disease, premature aging, and leading us to an early grave.

Thankfully, there is an even higher version of our selves which lives off-campus. Let’s call this part of us, Skyler.

Connecting with Skyler can help to keep Charlie from being over-powered by an overactive Lassie. Since Skyler is outside of your body, by adopting this point of view you can see a perspective of any given situation outside of yourself. From this vantage point you can be more objective and less judgmental.

Skyler can be the mediator between Charlie and Lassie enabling you to achieve your highest and best.

Mindfulness comes from Skyler and meditating allows us to be more connected with that higher part of our selves. This can allow you to live a better life, your best life, and make the world a better place for you and your dog inside of you.

Ultimate Pet Rescue

Saving Dogs and Cats for Pet Therapy

There is no doubt shut-ins, single people living alone, persons in advance age and those suffering from declining health conditions all benefit from the unconditional love from a dog or cat.

Although having a pet is like having another family member (which is a good thing). I know some people, when finances are running thin, the pets come first; the special food, veterinary services or whatever the pet needs for a good quality of life takes precedence. Not unlike the care and consideration one would have for ones own offspring. Feed the kids (and/or animals) the good stuff and I will sacrifice and eat from the dollar menu, when times are tough.

Not being able to financially take on and meet the needs of having a pet as a companion can prevent one from embracing the idea of adding a dog or a cat to their home.

While millions of perspective homes are available and human hearts yearn for having a pet as a companion, millions of dogs and cats are euthanized because we don’t have the resources available to house them and care for them while waiting for someone to adopt them.

Ultimate pet rescue matching at risk dogs and cats with pet parents in need

Recognizing the obvious connection between an abundance of available pets and the millions of people who could benefit immensely from adopting them, leads me to believe that the time has come for

Ultimate Pet Rescue

Why not rescue the animals on death row and the humans who would enjoy a higher quality of life with them?

I would love to see Ultimate Pet Rescue (UPR) buses traveling around cities all over the world.

The UPR buses would be modified and redesigned; removing seats and replacing them with pet transport cages. Busses would travel weekly, beginning their journey by loading up dogs and cats from death row onto the busses.

The busses would travel to locations where potential recipients are located. Good matches would be found for both pet and new pet parent.

The non-profit UPR organization would provide food and veterinary care to assure the quality of life for the pet, without burdening the pet parent’s resources.
