Be an Expert in Your Field

One of the best things that I help people to do is to get them to a status of being easily recognizable as an expert in their field. I will give you the simple process that they have gone through so that by doing likewise you can be an expert in your field.

7 Steps to Be an Expert in Your Field

Step 1: Experience, Gifts, and Abilities Review

Review your particular experiences, gifts, and abilities. And ask yourself,

Which one of these would I like to be known as an expert for?

That is a lot of review to pick just one. But stick to this process until you have just one. Take as long as you need. Now associate your area of expertise with a title.

Step 2: Brand Your Name

In order to be easily identifiable, you will need a name that you own. That is to say, a name that you can own the dot-com for. In this day and age, you’re not real or credible unless you are hugely rich, famous, or own your own name dot com.

As you start this, you may be surprised that your name dot com is not available, so keep making variations for your name until you find one that you can buy. Now, this might be a problem with you ending up with a name that is not on your book’s cover or author page. Don’t worry about that for now, you can fix all that later. For now, get your name dot com, and it doesn’t matter how long the domain name is, just buy it.

Once you own your name dot com, start using this as your name everywhere. Even consider making a trip to the courthouse to change your name to this. It is a very easy form to fill out and file, and its inexpensive, like $125 or so.

Step 3: Brand What You Do

If your name is Betty and you are a baker, maybe even the world’s best baker, you can’t just brand yourself as a baker, baker betty, or even betty the baker. Why? Because if you go to GoDaddy.com and search for those dot-com domains, you will find they are already taken. You must keep moving through the process until you come up with an excellent version of what you do.

In Betty’s case, she is best known for baking with such love and passion that it inspires others to reach for new heights in personal growth, leading to their generosity and random acts of kindness, all in the hopes of making a contribution in some way to make the world a better place.

She was able to get worldlovebaker.com.

Follow her example, and you do the same.

Step 4: Brand a Specific Area of Expertise

Now that you know what you do, you must select a specific area of expertise. Though you may have expertise in many facets of what you do as a professional “baker,” if we continue to follow Betty as an example, pick only one.

Betty picks fudge, as that is what she gets the most compliments on. She needs to get a dot com domain name for this as well, and going through the permeations is a painstaking process as GoDaddy keeps reporting that her queries for dot-coms are all coming up as taken, or for sale at a premium price, thousands of dollars, or tries to sell her cheesy alternatives with rinky-dink extensions, anything other than a dot com. She persists and comes up with worldlovefudge.com. This is brilliant as it ties in with her what-she-does brand.

Step 5: Write a Book About Your Expertise

Ideally, your expertise dot com will be the name of the little book that you are going to write about this very specific area. In betty’s book, World Love Fudge, subtitled, “How to send love to the world and make the world a better place with fudge (recipe included)”

In the book, which must ideally number 110 pages, she tells stories about how her world love fudge has helped others to reach new heights in personal growth, leading to their generosity and random acts of kindness, all in the hopes of making a contribution in some way to make the world a better place. She also includes a fanciful story about how her fudge might be used to bring all the leaders of all the countries together in peace.

She includes the recipe and encourages everyone to make the fudge, share it with their friends, teach them to do likewise, until the world becomes one, just by making and sharing her fudge with others.

Why 110 pages? Because if your expertise book is any less than that, you may not have your book’s title and most importantly “Your Name” printed on the spine. That’s free advertising if it’s on any shelf spine-out.

Step 6: Publish and Print Your Branded Expertise Book

Don’t make this difficult, just use Amazon’s online self-publishing machine at kdp.amazon.com and publish it there. Don’t worry about the cover art for this book, you can just use their free book cover templates. Set a price and publish the darn thing.

Step 7: Fire up the Websites

Make sure you have at least one-page websites for each of these dot coms. GoDaddy provides a few pages for your site for free and offers free templates. Don’t make this any harder than it is. If you’re struggling with this, just go to fiverr.com and find someone who will do it for you in exchange for a few dollars. Then change your password after the work is done, just to be safe.

You will have three to put up.

1 Your name dot com, where you will have a photo and a little bio for yourself and your contact information.

2 What you do dot com. Ideally, this will be unique enough that if anyone asks you what you do, they will be curious enough to type it into Google, and you will be able to establish credibility because this is your area of expertise, and there you will feature your specific expertise book, which links to its web site.

3 Which is the final piece of the be an expert in your field trifecta your specific area of expertise book dot com, which will have a description about the book, feature a click to buy it on amazon.com, and have links to the authors web site, your name dot com, and what you do dot com.

Once you’ve done this, you can be easily identifiable with credibility as an expert in your field. Of course, there are many other things that you could do to establish domination in your field, but in this manner, at this stage of the game, you can be Googled and found, and if anyone dare try to challenge your authority, someone will point out your book on Amazon and say,

“He did write the book on it.”

Well, there’s that.

You are now an expert in your field.
