Beyond Religion: Embracing the Fullness of Counseling Others

I feel incredibly fortunate to have access to sensitive information from many people, each with unique life experiences that range from the every day to the extraordinary. This journey began many years ago when I started my work in counseling and consulting within the Christian ministry. In that role, I was bound by the privilege of penitent confidentiality, which protected those I counseled from having their shared stories exposed, even if I were asked to do so by a court.

In my younger days, I prioritized meeting people at their level without judgment, understanding that the human condition is vast and varied. Even though my memory wasn’t perfect, this didn’t affect my ability to serve. Some of the stories I heard were so unusual and intriguing that they stayed with me, even if I didn’t fully understand them at the time. These memories have remained as vivid snapshots of experiences I couldn’t yet comprehend.

When I encountered something in a story that seemed strange or unfamiliar, I didn’t let it hinder the counseling process. Instead, I stayed supportive, walking alongside the individual and accepting their experience without trying to fit it into my own framework. This approach allowed me to build trust and understanding with those I counseled, even when their perspectives differed from the norm.

As the years passed, I continued to gather stories and insights from a wide range of people. Over time, I noticed how these pieces of information started to connect, much like puzzle pieces fitting together to create a clearer picture. This growing tapestry of knowledge helped me understand things that had once seemed mysterious and out of reach.

Today, my interactions with clients with unique and sometimes unconventional experiences are more interesting than ever. With a lifetime of understanding these strange and unusual stories, I’ve moved beyond the confines of traditional religion, embracing a broader perspective of God and all of existence. This shift has made my work much more enjoyable and fulfilling.

In the past, I had to be careful not to discuss ideas or experiences that fell outside of religious beliefs. Now, I can converse openly with clients about various topics, including those some might label as “conspiracies” or “paranormal.” It’s fascinating to think that some activities and ideas within Christianity and other religions could also be considered conspiratorial or paranormal by those unfamiliar with them.

From my current perspective, I believe all things are possible, whether they are explainable or believable. My journeys into the unknown with clients are brief but illuminating. I always take care to return to my core ministerial beliefs, ensuring that my work aligns with my life’s calling and purpose.

The foundation of my ministry is the “love of Jesus.” This love means more than most Christians realize, but I love them just as they are, just like Jesus loves me just as I am, and I am forever grateful for that.

Since high school, Jesus has been my hero. Before that, my hero was Superman. I still look up to both of them because they have much in common. One is a comic book hero who helped me admire Jesus, and the other is the real hero of the New Testament.

Both heroes continue to inspire me. Through my life experiences, I’ve also stayed connected to important people in my life who have passed away. This connection is a fantastic part of my journey; many more people inspire me, some in the physical, some not so much.

Throughout my career, I’ve witnessed and experienced things firsthand that I can’t share due to confidentiality and my commitment to my personal ministry. These experiences have deepened my understanding and strengthened my resolve to help others in their unique journeys. But let me tell you this: dismissing someone because their experience differs from what you know can be a significant disservice. You might be surprised by what you discover when you listen and support someone who possesses knowledge outside your experience.

Embracing this mindset has led me on an exciting journey filled with learning, growth, and a deeper appreciation for the diversity of human experiences. Each story I hear adds another layer to my understanding of the world, reminding me there is always more to learn and explore.

Top 10 Reasons Relationships Fail

Desperate to save your precious dream, you explore all the challenges that caused your relationship to be compromised or fail. Therapeutic intervention dissects your relationship and all its flaws such as

      1. basic compatibility
      2. communication styles
      3. disinterest
      4. abuse
      5. lack of trust
      6. betrayal
      7. unmet expectations
      8. unfulfilled obligations
      9. money issues
      10. infidelity

These top 10 reasons that relationships fail are not why relationships fail, nor are any of the other so-called reasons; they are only treated as symptoms, while the underlying toxic disease continues to spread – not only in your relationship – but most relationships in the world.

The real reason why relationships fail is due to the spread of this dangerous disease which spreads like a viral wildfire. This toxin, left to itself will destroy and break down every love relationship we’re involved in, not just out romantic relationships. This viral disease leads to the failure and destruction of all kinds of relationships, including a significant other, family, mom, dad, brother, sister, children, coworkers, bosses and platonic friends.

All our relationships are at risk of being infected by this deadly disease, which is the real root cause of the death of any relationship.

The Truth: Why Relationships Fail

You might be surprised to discover there is only one reason that relationships fail. If you’re fervently seeking to find true love, you will never find it if you are infected with the toxic disease.

Wonder what the toxin is that will thwart any relationship you have and cause it to fall to pieces, no matter how you try to save it?

The name of the disease is

LOVE

Yes, “love;” the definition of it, the concept of it and everything you believe about it, love is the disease.

What if

Everything You Know About Love is Wrong?

You’ve been infected with the toxin which has spread more and more with every interaction you’ve had with other relationships as far back as you can remember (and before).

Your parents, society, the media and Disney have planted and spread the disease so pervasively that you couldn’t recognize true love if you saw it.

After Awakening and Walking in New Life With Jesus

I remember it like it was yesterday, though it was sometime in the late seventies. Mary and I were just beginning to understand what it meant to truly awaken, to rise up into the new life that only Jesus can offer. It was more than a conversion. It was a holy disruption. Life as we knew it came to an abrupt halt, and something indescribable, something sacred, began.

We didn’t know at the time that this was the beginning of a whole new ministry, or that we would help others navigate the aftershock of awakening to real life in Jesus. But that’s exactly what happened. And so we founded Eternalight Ministries, and its outreach wing, Spiritual Bootcamp & Street Fellowship, in Centralia, Washington. It was a safe space for new believers who found themselves confused, displaced, and overwhelmed by the raw newness of it all.

Once you awaken in new life with Jesus, you can’t go back.

That realization hit us hard. Friends we used to laugh with suddenly felt foreign. Conversations felt like noise. The gatherings we once enjoyed now rang hollow. It wasn’t judgment, it was disconnection. Like our spirits had been rebooted, and the old software didn’t run anymore.

I remember sitting at dinner with folks we once called family. Jokes, gossip, the usual banter, none of it meant anything anymore. It was like we were floating outside our own bodies, watching a world that no longer recognized us. And the feeling was mutual. We’d mention Jesus, and they’d get uncomfortable. We’d talk about the Holy Spirit, and they’d glance at each other as if to say, What happened to Dave and Mary?

What happened was… Jesus happened.

The scariest part of waking up in the love of Jesus is that everything familiar falls away. Our identities were no longer rooted in what we did, who we knew, or where we’d been. They were rooted in who we belonged to. And with that clarity came loss: the loss of fitting in, the loss of old patterns, the loss of shallow comforts.

But with that loss came freedom.

The kind of freedom that takes time to adjust to. It’s like being released from a prison you didn’t know you were in. At first, you miss the walls. You miss the predictability. You miss the noise that kept you numb. But then the silence becomes holy. The solitude becomes sacred. And slowly, you start to breathe again, not just with your lungs, but with your soul.

Eternalight Ministries became more than just a church project. It became a beacon. A lighthouse for the freshly awakened.

Reaching out to others in music was a way to greet others who were searching. Norman, my brother in Jesus, and I created an extension of our ministries, Eternalight Studios, in Centralia. We played music together and had been in several Christian bands, and we wanted to help others extend their ministries through their music.

We met young people who had their own stories, people who had seen through the lie of the world and didn’t know where to go next. They weren’t looking for religion. They were looking for Jesus. Real Jesus. The one who flipped tables, touched the untouchables, wept with the broken, and loved without condition.

Mary and I walked with them. We didn’t have all the answers, but we had the same fire. We created Spiritual Street Fellowship for those who didn’t feel at home in pews or with polished church traditions. We met at the Lincoln Building, in homes, on street corners, in borrowed spaces, wherever the Spirit led. What we offered was simple: unconditional love, guidance through the fog, and the truth that you are not alone in this new life.

We didn’t preach at people. We walked with them. We held space for their grief, the grief of leaving behind a false world. We cried with them when old friends fell away, and rejoiced with them as new relationships, holy ones, were formed.

This was the love of Jesus in action:

    • Not judgment, but compassion.
    • Not condemnation, but invitation.
    • Not tradition, but transformation.

It wasn’t about perfection. It was about presence. About living in the now with the awareness that Jesus lives in you, and through you, and with you, always.

No one talks much about the after of awakening. The days that follow the lightning bolt. The hours when everything feels unfamiliar and every step feels like a risk.

But that’s where Jesus walks the closest. That’s where the deepest healing happens. That’s where new life takes root.

We were grateful beyond words for that season. For the awkward beginnings, the hard conversations, the divine isolation that made room for revelation. And above all, for the love that grew between us, in us, and around us.

We saw it in each other. We saw it in those we served.

Life after awakening isn’t always easy. But it is always true. And once you’ve tasted truth, there’s no going back.

You don’t need to go back.
You were made for forward.
