Why Heart-Led Coaches Must Charge What Their Work Is Worth (Even When It Hurts)

As heart-led coaches, we’re in this work because we care deeply. We’ve walked through fire, found healing, gathered tools, and now we want to help others rise. So when someone shows up with big dreams and big limitations, and we see so much potential in them, our instinct is to help. So, believing so much in their potential, we bend, reduce, subsidize. We say, “Just give me what you can.” And sometimes… they bail. Not always. But often enough to leave a bruise.

The Trap of the Compassionate Discount

It feels noble in the moment. You’re investing in someone who can’t invest in themselves… yet. Even though we don’t like to admit it:

    • When people don’t pay, they don’t stay.
    • When people don’t invest, they don’t transform.
    • When we remove the cost, we often remove the catalyst.

What we give as a gift, they receive as a gesture. And gestures are easy to ignore when life gets hard.

Why We Must Charge Premium Prices for Premium Programs

    1. Because Transformation Requires Skin in the Game
When someone pays a premium price, it’s not just money exchanged, it’s identity.
      They say, “I’m worth this.”
They move from passive hope to powerful commitment.
They show up differently. And they get different results.
    2. Because Your Energy Has Value
You’re not just delivering content. You’re holding space.
      Creating structure.
Pouring your heart, time, and soul into someone’s evolution.
To give that to someone who hasn’t equally committed? That’s a recipe for burnout or heartbreak.
    3. Because Structure Holds the Sacred
When your container is clear, solid, and honored, it becomes holy.
Charging what your program is worth honors both you and your client. It creates a container strong enough to withstand the resistance, fear, and transformation ahead.

The Hidden Cost of Helping Too Much

When you lower the price, but not the intensity of the journey, you may be setting your client up for failure. Not because they’re lazy. Not because they don’t care.

But because:

    • They didn’t have to stretch to say “yes.”
    • They didn’t believe in themselves enough to invest.
    • And without that foundational belief… they’ll likely retreat when it gets hard.

Meanwhile, you are left holding disappointment. You saw the potential. You made space. You sacrificed. And they walked away.

That kind of heartbreak leaves scars.

So What Do We Do Instead?

    1. Offer Scholarships, Not Discounts
If you truly want to help, create a structured scholarship process.
Make the application rigorous. Require commitment in other forms, time, testimonials, referrals, weekly check-ins.
      This filters out the dabblers.
    2. Use a Readiness Assessment
Help people self-assess if they’re truly ready for your container. If they’re not, love them where they are, and invite them back when they are.
    3. Don’t Rescue. Invite.
Your job isn’t to carry them.
Your job is to show them how to rise, and walk beside them if they choose to step up.

A Loving Reminder to the Coach with a Big Heart

Yes, you will still care. Yes, you will still see the light in people before they do. But your sacred calling is not to save them. It’s to build a space where those who are ready can finally become who they were meant to be.

And those who aren’t? Love them. Bless them. And let them grow in their own time.

Because when they are truly ready, they’ll find their way back to you, ready to pay, stay, and transform.

To all the coaches with tender hearts and big visions:

Your compassion is your superpower.
But boundaries are your shield.
Use both.

With love,

A fellow coach who’s been there
