I Tried That Before and It Didn’t Work

Sometimes you run into a client who wants to live a better life, and you’re doing your best to offer them options to review, to see if you can uncover a spark to ignite the fire of passion, but they keep saying, “I tried that before and it didn’t work.” Maybe you’ve even said it yourself. How can you deal with defeatism?

In our society, defeatism is an accepted (if not preferred) and median state of mind, for the “normal” operation of our socio-economic machine depends upon keeping the masses subdued enough to not reach for excellence, and if they do, to keep the bar so low, that anyone can achieve something without trying too hard, and have an excuse to celebrate an accomplishment.

Like a birthday. You did it! You made it through another year on planet earth! Hooray!

Have you got anything to show for it? Is your life any better than it was the year before? Have you made a significant contribution to your community, or done something to have a positive impact on others?

Oh, and let’s start promoting this proliferation of mediocrity as early as possible, let’s give every kid on the team a trophy just for showing up. Are we keeping the bar low enough?

It’s no surprise when someone attempts any given thing once and walks away dejected assuming that trying again, or something different, might yield a different outcome. Sure, maybe other people could do it, but I can’t.

I Tried That Before and It Didn’t Work

But I get an award for half-assed trying something, right? Yeah, you probably do. You get to tell stories to your friends how you tried and failed, and they reward you because, “At least you tried,” as you reinforce any fears they might have about trying anything, for they would not want to suffer the same disappointing outcome, like you have.

These defeatist stories are prevalent amidst our culture, and they are toxic.

Do we need to find reasons to celebrate? Indeed. Nothing boosts morale like a unbridled celebration, but let it have substance and meaning.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not underplaying the value of celebrating someone getting out of bed, eating some potato chips, and taking a shower, if the person is severely depressed and can’t find a reason to get out of bed.

The celebratory process is a spectrum, on a sliding scale, where improvement is measured on an individual basis, not simply black and white. I’m also not saying that I am disregarding the importance of celebrating small wins.

What I am saying is that there is no impetus to excel, to push beyond the first sign of trouble or resistance.

Giving Up is Status Quo

Unfortunately, in this day and age, mediocrity and giving up is status quo. This is a great disservice in our world, and the powers that be are hoping that you don’t notice… but you are noticing.

You are still noticing that things that you’re told are not ringing true. You’re beginning to notice that when you see something dramatic unfold in the news and media, when reporters tell you what is going on, you’re left feeling like there’s more going on than meets the eye.

You’re left wanting to have a better life. You know there is more to this life, that there is much more for you to give, have, and experience in this life, and you couldn’t be more right.

You see, you came to live this life with your unique and sacred purpose, message, passion, and mission but the system that you were born into was designed to delete this underlying reason for living from your consciousness by the time you reach seven years old. And you are bombarded by data, information, dysfunction, chaos, and fear, to keep you feeling like, “If this is all there is? Well, I will just make the best of it.” Good luck with that.

You’ve done your best to make the best of this, and still, you know there has to be more… and there is.

This is your awakening.

And this awakening is spreading, like a virus, and as more and more of us are waking up, “Giving up,” is no longer a part of the equation.

And no one is talking about it.

The time for empty words, posts, or protests, have no place here. You know what is happening, here?

As people are awakening, they are taking inspired action, pursuing their purpose, message, passion, and mission, taking a step every day toward a world that they want, a world that is waiting for them to arrive, and they are not quitting.

When they encounter resistance, they keep going. They may not battle the resistance (because that may not be the best approach to opposition), but they are quietly but fervently moving forward, not letting anything get to them (at least, not for long).

I rarely work with people who say, “I tried that before and it didn’t work.” (And If I can’t get them to let go of that anchor, I refer them elsewhere.) Instead, I find myself surrounded by the people who are passionate about their lives, what they want, what they can give to others, and the world. These people are awakening, and evolving, and they are going on about their work in silence.

They are not wasting their time complaining about the way things are. They are not talking about it. They are not bragging about it. They are quietly and diligently growing, changing, and becoming more powerful, for a better world.

If that’s you, you’re ready to leave behind the excuses and take your life back.

The time has come for you to live a better life, your best life, and make the world a better place.

Depression Is a Good Thing

Depression gets a bad rap because it can be so all-consuming and overpowering. If you give in to it and let depression take you over, it could destroy you. You could lose all desire to go on and even contemplate suicide. Depression is debilitating, can be horrible and all the while, depression is a good thing.

Depression is hard to go through and in our contemporary society, we do everything we can to avoid it or stave off the effects of depression. We self-medicate or reach out for prescription medications to keep us from feeling bad and this works to some degree. It makes us numb to the effects of depression, and we feel better.

We know, that the approach of self-numbing without some attention being paid to the underlying causes of the depression is counter-productive, now that we have statistical data to look back on to evaluate the lack of success due to the “ignore it for long enough and it will go away,” approach to dealing with the feelings associated with depression.

Creating a false sense of wellness is not good medicine.

We now realize that creating a false sense of wellness and not dealing with the issues related to the causal factors of depression is not good medicine.

And while we’ve been spending all this time focusing on tweaking the brain’s chemistry to make people feel better, we’ve missed the point completely:

Depression is a Good Thing

Why do you think you get depressed?

You get depressed because something’s not right, and when something’s wrong, it needs some attention.

Depression is like the Check Engine light on your car.

Sure, you can still drive your car with the Check Engine light on, so what’s the worry? You can ignore it, even put tape over it and pretend it’s not even lighted at all.

If you ignore it, your car will fail. Left unchecked, your car could be reduced to 3,000 pounds of useless equipment on the side of the road.

Depression is God’s gift to the humanity, a sort of check engine light, alerting your consciousness in a profound way that things need to change.

Just like the check engine light, when you become aware of depression, at your earliest convenience, you would be well-advised to take your vehicle (body) into the shop to at the very least run diagnostics to see what might be amiss.

Depending on the cause of the depression (check engine light) you may not need to take immediate action. You may be able to continue to operate your vehicle unimpeded for a while, while you make plans for dealing with the underlying issues causing the fix engine light (depression) to catch your attention.

You might be able to spray something here, dab something there, or pour a little something in the gas tank, while you’re figuring out what approach you’re going to take to resolve the issue, but this is only temporary. If you do not deal with the cause of the indication of the need for repair, replacement, or radical change, you will be left with a situation which may be far worse, possibly altogether unrepairable.

Depression is a Good Thing

While it is uncomfortable and painful, depression is alerting you that something needs to be done to change your life for the better.

Don’t be shy about getting third-party assistance in seeing what’s wrong because often we are unable to see what’s going on under the hood. Check with a trusted friend or seek out a therapist, coach, counselor, or member of the clergy to reach out to for a more in-depth diagnostic.

The good news is, on the other side of the depression, if you’ve tended to the reason for the depression and made the necessary life-changes, a brighter, more meaningful life of love and happiness awaits you.

Once you’ve dealt with and resolved your depressive issues, you can start to live a better life, your best life, and make the world a better place.

So, the next time you get depressed, don’t run to the “drug store” to numb the feeling. Instead, consider drilling down into your soul to see if you can figure out what repairs, replacements, or radical changes need to be made. Massive change will make you feel much better than any form of self-medication. Plus, it will raise your vibration and change the direction if your life, creating a whole new world of possibilities.

Your new, more expanded and evolved, life is waiting for you.

The Best Story Ever

The best story ever has yet to be written but here’s the best news:

The Best Story Ever is yours

the best story ever and you are the hero in the pivotal scene

Even if your story has been magnificent up ‘til now the best story ever is yet to come.

But… but… but, you say…

My life is in shambles
I’ve hit rock bottom
I can’t make it one more day

To which, I say:

Awesome!

And before you get the chance to ask me if I’ve lost my mind, I remind you:

The Best Story Ever Starts That Way

Think about it. Don’t we cheer for the hero of the best story ever, when all seems lost, when it appears there is no chance and he or she is exhausted, left for dead, and hoping that their next breath would be their last?

It’s impossible
I just can’t do it

Whether we’re turning the page or sitting in a theater on the edge of the seat, we’re waiting, anticipating, even praying for the hero of the best story ever… While we can’t wait to see

What Happens Next

If you’re in the depths of despair, have lost it all and can’t imagine having the will to go on, then

Congratulations!

In all the best books, best movies and the greatest stories ever told, if not the opening scene, this moment – the moment that you are experiencing, right now – is the pivotal moment in the best story ever. And YOU are the hero.

This is how to start a story that captivates and mesmerizes all who gain access, whether it’s around a campfire, seen on the big screen, on stage, television, read in a printed book or online, your situation is among the best scenes in all great stories.

A few of the best scenes from movies exemplifying this type of pivotal moment that quickly come to mind include Alien, Amélie, Back to the Future, Die Hard, E.T. The Extraterrestrial, Erin Brockovich, Gladiator, Gravity, Harry Potter, Hunger Games, It’s a Wonderful Life, Indiana Jones, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Lord of the Rings, Rocky, Star Wars, Still Alice, The Matrix, The Princess Bride, The Terminator, and I could go on and on… and I think you could think of some, too…

Whether your pivotal moment leads to an instantaneous resolution or opens up an entirely new journey to unfold is yet to be seen but one thing’s for certain, something far greater than could ever be imagined in that critical point in time lies just beyond.

When all is lost, you are left for dead face-down on the mat and you can barely hear the referee (who sounds somewhat like the Grim Reaper) begins the long count,

One

When you can’t find the will to go on and you think you might just be better off dead…

Two

You try to move your body, but can feel it unresponsive…

Three

You review your decision to bet it all on this match, and where did that get you? Here?

Four

You think of all the promises you made… Now, that all is lost…

Five

Your past flashes in your mind; there have been good times and bad…

Six

It feels like it would be okay to let it go. At least death would be the end of the pain.

Seven

One last look before your unsaid, “goodbye,” and you’re out for good…

Eight

As you find the strength to open a small slit in your eye, the initial blinding flash of light fades and you see…

Nine
Whatever it is that you see in that moment ushers in hope and determination to go on, as you push yourself up from the mat

This is your defining moment, your Number Nine.

Number 9, number 9, number 9…

The crowd goes wild!

What happens next?

The best story ever is just beginning…

I’m Done

I don’t know what to say, feel like giving up on life. It’s just too hard, I can’t do this anymore, got nothing left to lose. I don’t know what to do, I am done.

im done i dont know what to say when you feel like giving up

Ever felt like that? Sad, depressed, lonely, betrayed, broken, dejected, like you’re just done with it all and can’t make it one more day?

I’ve tried and tried, there’s nothing left for me to do. I feel like giving up on everything. I can’t go on like this, I can’t take it anymore…

You feel like your last bit of energy is gone, you know you’ve done everything you could possibly do, and you just can’t make it one more day. You feel like your life is not worth anything, because no matter how hard you try, you end up empty-handed and feeling empty.

The emptiness grows, consumes you, takes you over… and the you that you used to know fades as the thought crosses your mine that there would be no point in taking one more breath. You ask yourself, “Why fight it?” You are so done with all of it.

This is the best news, ever

What the f=(# are you talking about? You *^#~* ^*%#(~’n *&#~(#*!

That’s good. Let it out. It’s okay… In your darkest moment its okay for you to express yourself in any way you want to. You’ve probably held in your feelings far too long.

So, you think there’s nothing to see here, no silver lining, no hope for a good outcome. Yu feel like this is it. It’s over, and you can’t just take one more step.

And I tell you, this is the best news ever.

You, your higher self, God, the angels, the universe is anxiously watching every move you make, right now, and cheering you on, just like you.

Just like me? I’m done.

Think about it… Right now, if you were not living your life, but reading about it in a novel… and you came to this part of the story:

The hero or heroine has done his/her very best. There is no doubt that the hero in this story has done the very best he/she could with what they had, and it comes to this. You have come to the end of this chapter and the person you’ve come to admire and feel like you can relate to is at the lowest point imaginable, feels like he/she can’t go on.

Holding the book in your hands, you can feel two-thirds of the book in your left-hand and one-third of the book in your right hand. Do you close the book, throw it in the trash and walk away?

No. You can’t wait to see what happens next! You turn the page. (Okay, maybe you check the table of contents, the page number count of the book, and then turn the page!)

You’re thinking to yourself, “Don’t give up. You can do this!” Just like your higher self is saying to you right now:

You Got This

Something so much better is waiting for you

It may be just beyond your reach, but I can see it from my vantage point. You’ve just got to hold on and keep going. You don’t even have to feel good about it, but it is there, waiting for you…

If you can only make it one more day.

That’s all I ask. Just one day, and then maybe another, but only one day at a time. Just keep moving.

And me? When I find myself there?

Yes, I too, find myself in my darkest hour, and have many times throughout the course of my life.

And now, when I feel like giving up, I don’t know what to say, like I just can’t do this anymore…

I know that something better – so much more incredibly better – is waiting for me, just beyond my reach. I can’t see it, but I know it’s there.

How do I know?

Because that’s the way it’s always been. Every time I’ve felt like cashing in my chips, and giving up because I was done, once and for all… For whatever reason delayed my checking-out, I made it one more day. And then another…

You know what happened: something so much better did come my way.

So, now when I find myself sinking into that place of darkness, I start looking around to see what I might be missing and using my desolate feeling as an indicator to look for ways to change my direction. In these moments I look for opportunities to do something I’ve never done before, be places that I wouldn’t have probably been before, because I know something amazing is waiting for me.

Just like the most amazing part of your life is waiting for you.

You Got This

You are the hero in your story…

turn the page.
