Cash or Trash: What Happens to Your Belongings After You Die

Everybody’s heard the phrase, “You can’t take it with you.” Most people nod their heads, agree with it… and then go right back to accumulating, protecting, organizing, insuring, and worrying about their stuff. Because while we say we understand it… we don’t actually live like we understand it. But every now and then, life brings you close enough to the truth that you can’t ignore it anymore.

For me, it started with my dad’s things. Then it continued with friends who passed. And what I began to notice, a subtle hint at first, then increasingly troubling, was this: No one cares about your stuff like you do. Not even close.

When someone is gone, their belongings go through a predictable process. Not emotionally… but practically.

Their “treasures” become:

    • Consolidated
    • Sorted
    • Sold
    • Donated
    • Taken
    • Or thrown away

Sometimes respectfully. Sometimes carelessly. Sometimes opportunistically or even nefariously. And in the end, almost everything falls into one of two categories:

Cash… or trash.

That’s not cynical. That’s observable reality. The object that meant something to you… is just an object to someone else.

Why Does This Feel So Unsettling?

Because deep down, we don’t just collect things. We attach meaning to them. That chair isn’t just a chair. That tool isn’t just a tool. That collection isn’t just a collection.

It represents:

    • Time invested
    • Experiences lived
    • Identity expressed
    • Moments remembered

So when we realize that meaning doesn’t transfer automatically… it shakes something loose inside of us. Because it forces a deeper question: If the meaning doesn’t survive… what actually does?

Why, You Ask?

Because nothing has inherent value. Value is assigned, and more importantly… value is temporary unless it is transferred.

If you don’t actively pass along the meaning of something, it defaults back to neutral, and neutral things get processed. Quickly.

So What’s a Better Way?

This isn’t about becoming detached or minimalist overnight. It’s about becoming intentional.

Here are a few grounded ways to approach your “stuff” differently, while you’re still here to do something about it:

    1. Curate, Don’t Accumulate

Instead of asking, “Do I want this?”
ask:

“Is this worthy of being part of my life story?”

Because if it’s not meaningful now, it won’t magically become meaningful later.

    1. Transfer Meaning While You’re Alive

If something matters to you…

Don’t wait.

        • Give it to someone now
        • Tell them why it matters
        • Share the story behind it

Because without the story, the item loses most of its value. With the story, even something small can become priceless.

    1. Convert Possessions Into Experiences

Objects sit. Experiences live on, in you, and in others.

Instead of protecting your stuff… Ask:

“How can this serve a memory, a connection, or a moment?”

That’s where lasting value is created.

    1. Document What Matters

If you have items you truly care about:

        • Write about them
        • Record their significance
        • Attach meaning in a way that survives you

Because memory fades, but documented meaning can be carried forward.

    1. Simplify the Burden You Leave Behind

Most people don’t think about this… but when you’re gone, someone has to deal with everything you leave.

You can either leave:

        • A logistical burden
        • Or a thoughtful legacy

One is overwhelming. The other is a gift.

What Endures

It’s not your stuff. It never was.

What lasts is:

      • The way you made people feel
      • The impact you had
      • The experiences you created
      • The meaning you shared

That’s the part that doesn’t get sold off or thrown away. That’s the part that endures.

Is It Time for a Reframe?

This realization feels unsettling at first, even a little frightening, because it forces you to look at everything you’ve built, collected, and protected… and ask what really remains.

But there’s another way to see it. Not as loss… But as freedom.

If your stuff doesn’t define your value… Then you’re free to define it yourself. Right now. While it still matters.

Think About It

At some point, whether expected or not, you become unable to protect, organize, or assign meaning to your things. And when that moment comes your stuff will be handled by someone else, in a way that makes sense to them.

So the real question isn’t, “What will happen to my stuff?”

The real question is:

“What do I want my life to stand for, beyond my stuff?”

Because that’s the only part no one can throw away.

When Effort Becomes Escape and Trying Harder Isnt the Answer

There is a kind of effort that looks noble on the surface but quietly drains the life out of us. It’s the effort of chasing one more solution, one more possibility, one more breakthrough, especially when we feel powerless, afraid, or cornered by circumstances we don’t want to accept. We tell ourselves we’re being proactive. We tell ourselves we’re not giving up. Deep down, something else is happening. We’re avoiding stillness. We’re avoiding the grief of acknowledging what is.

I know this terrain well. I’ve walked it. I’ve burned enormous amounts of energy trying to fix situations that were already slipping beyond my control, believing that if I just tried harder, learned more, searched wider, or found the right thing, I could bend reality back into a shape I could live with.

What I didn’t realize at the time was that all that effort wasn’t moving me forward. It was keeping me suspended, while I desperately continued to dig the hole deeper.

The Trap of Endless Searching

When someone is overwhelmed by illness, fear, loss, or uncertainty, the mind goes hunting. It searches the internet. It searches AI. It searches obscure technologies, foreign treatments, miracle devices, secret knowledge, hidden cures.

And the more desperate the situation feels, the more exotic the solutions become. This isn’t stupidity. This isn’t weakness. It’s a nervous system looking for control when it feels it has none.

The problem is that this kind of searching creates the illusion of progress without the substance of it. It feels like movement, but it’s motion without direction. Wheel-spinning disguised as hope.

And the cruel irony is this: the simpler, gentler, more grounded solutions—the ones that actually support healing, often feel too small, too ordinary, too slow to someone who is in panic mode. So they’re dismissed.

When Hope Becomes Exhaustion

There comes a point where “not giving up” turns into self-harm. When every waking moment is spent trying to hold things together. When every ounce of energy is poured into preventing loss. When rest feels irresponsible and acceptance feels like betrayal.

That’s not hope anymore. That’s exhaustion wearing a hopeful mask.

I’ve lived that state, trying to save relationships, futures, and outcomes that were already dissolving. Trying to outwork reality. Trying to outthink grief. Trying to override the truth with effort. And all it did was leave me depleted, desperate, and further from myself.

The Quiet Shift That Changes Everything

Healing, real healing, often begins with something that feels counterintuitive: Disengagement.

Not giving up on life. Not giving up on recovery. But disengaging from the drama, the frantic searching, the constant reaching for external rescue.

Disengagement says:

“I will stop pouring energy into what I cannot control.”
“I will stop chasing what keeps me anxious.”
“I will return my attention to what I can actually do, consistently, gently, and sustainably.”

This is not passive. It is profoundly active.

A Healthier Path Forward (No Drama Required)

For someone caught in this cycle, the path forward doesn’t start with new information. It starts with regulation.

Here are a few grounding shifts that actually help:

    1. Reduce inputs before adding solutions
Too much information dysregulates the system. Healing requires fewer voices, not more.
    2. Commit to simplicity for a defined period
Choose a small number of supportive practices and agree—without renegotiation—to do them consistently before chasing anything new.
    3. Shift from urgency to rhythm
Urgency burns out the body. Rhythm rebuilds it. Healing happens in patterns, not breakthroughs.
    4. Grieve what cannot be forced
There is power in allowing disappointment to be felt instead of outrun.
    5. Reclaim agency through presence, not control
The body heals best when it feels safe, not pressured.

The Hardest Truth and the Most Liberating One

Sometimes the greatest act of self-care is admitting that effort itself has become the problem. That the constant trying is what’s keeping us stuck.

That healing doesn’t always arrive through intensity, but through surrender, patience, and a willingness to stop fighting what already is.

If you find yourself exhausted from searching, researching, chasing, and hoping, this may be your invitation to pause. Not because nothing can help. But because something finally can, once you stop burning yourself at both ends trying to force it.

And that pause? That’s not the end of hope. It’s the beginning of a healthier kind.

Everything You Need is Inside of You

Everything you seek, everything you want for yourself, others, and the world, everything you need is inside of you to be and have whatever you desire and make your wildest dreams come true.

If you have a strong desire to occupy a certain station in life or be a certain type of person, your desires have already been manifested. The “you” that you desire to become has already appeared in all its fullness in the future.

Your desire is part of your birthright calling forth the “you” you were destined to be, the very same person you long to become. It is already done.

All the love you could possibly want exists within you right now in real time. You must look within yourself to find it. It has always been there, will always be there, in unlimited supply, and all you need to do is to tap into this vast powerhouse of love which is all-powerful, unconditional, and conquers all.

You have the power to send this purest of love energy to those to others, to those who struggle and face life’s greatest challenges. You can send love to the world, changing current circumstances, giving hope where there was none to be found, and calling forth new life in a desperate age.

All the happiness and joy you could ever want is there, waiting for you to be found and embraced, it is in every part of you, in all its fullness in any quantity you could imagine, ever present and hardwired, waiting for you to unleash it.

The peace that passes all understanding is fully activated within you. All you need to do is to let go of everything that clouds your view of it to see and feel all the purest peace that has always been there, will always be.

The prosperity and abundance which appears to elude you are already there, right now. All you need do is to remove all those thoughts and things that stand between you and all the things you want, as you embrace all your skills, abilities and gifts, allowing yourself to rise to your highest and best.

Have health concerns? Fear not. Perfect health is yours. It is all there in every cell of your body, the healthy you, waiting to come forth. You have the keys to overcoming every physiological or mental frailty, diagnosis or disease, inside of you, waiting to be released.

Looking to connect with others? You are already fully connected to all life. You are one with everything, all matter, seen and unseen, every person, place, and thing is an extension of yourself. All you have to do to realize this is true is to stop resisting and enforcing your own separation from the fullness of life. We are one.

All the attributes you desire to attain, trust, wisdom, discernment, intuition, all there inside of you waiting to be released.

Your mind is the insulator programmed to keep you from being all that you could possibly want to have or be. There is no struggle in having or being all that you desire. Those sparks of longing are all those things which you already are waiting to reveal themselves to you.

All you must do is to let go of all those things which keep you distracted from what you seek or desire, rise to the fullness of your divine nature and allow all that you desire to be, and be it will.

Your heart is the doorway to love which allows you to access all the unlimited possibilities, everything you want, everything you were destined to be and have as your birthright.

Billions of cells are causing you to want everything that is rightfully yours.

Let go of that which insulates you, your self, your ego, your programming, your beliefs, all that separates you from everything. Every “thing” is you and you are everything, exceeding your wildest expectations and dreams.

And all these possibilities in all their glory exists deep within every molecule of your body.

Stop resisting and let it be.

Let Go or Be Dragged

Thank God for saving me from a far worse fate

Sometimes you get all wrapped up in someone or something; heart, body, mind, and soul. Then when things start to go awry and its clearly time to move on, you don’t want to go. You’re not ready for the change. Maybe things aren’t the best they could be but they’re good enough, and you’re attached, deeply connected, and have a sense of safety and security even amidst all the chaos.

So you hang on.

The whole universe hints and brings you opportunities to do something different in your best interest, but you resist. Then all the powers beyond what we experience in the third dimension rally to champion for you.

God and all of creation knows there is something better waiting for you, but you don’t want to go, for a million reasons, mostly embedded in fear. You made promises. You’re dependable and exemplify truth and integrity. You feel obligated like the whole world is watching you, and you hold yourself to impossible standards because you want to be an example of doing the right thing, etc…

You persist, and God turns up the heat and all His angels champion to save you from this so that you can be ushered into your highest and best in a world that you cannot see and still you refuse to leave the toxicity and chaos.

Your life, the life as you know it, takes control of you, like a powerful addiction, and you refuse to let go, as you cannot possibly imagine life being any other way. You find ways to rationalize this is your lot in life and you succumb to the drone of everyday life defending it with every fiber of your being.

Your Guardian Angel shakes his head, thinking, “How long will it take for you to realize that life is full of changes and growth?” You’ve been fighting against yourself and all the energy and love in the world is beckoning you to change direction enough to be able to get a glimpse of what’s been waiting for you all this time.

Let Go or Be Dragged

If you continue to fight, your Guardian Angel must (if you leave your angel no other choice), will drag you, kicking and screaming, away from that station in life which is not serving you, and maybe leading you down the wrong path, even though you can’t see it at the time.

You’ve fought for your right to this struggle and now it’s come to this, your life is going to have to change and you will be forced to grow against your wishes. This will be a lengthy and painful process, but you left God no other choice.

Grieve

Accepting what is, will be hard, and the grieving process will be difficult to say the least, probably one of the hardest passages you will have to endure, but you can make it. You are love. You are loved. No one will ask you endure more than you can bear.

Don’t Fight

If you haven’t learned by now, the most valuable lesson you can learn is not to fight. Do not resist the opportunities for growth and change. The less resistance, the easier it will be for you.

And when the smoke clears, you will be able to see that all this adversity allowed you to be in the right place and the right time to usher you to a better life, your best life, enabled you to make a greater contribution and make the world a better place.

And if you’re like me, you will fall to your knees and thank God,

“Thank you, God,
for ripping my heart out!”

Thank you for the misery, the heartache, the destruction, allowing me to be stripped of all my pride because if it weren’t for my being dragged to death (that’s what it felt like), I would never have been in a position to achieve my highest and best.

Now, I can see that where I was, had me headed for a far more destructive end. As painful as it was, I was saved from mediocrity, disaster, and from myself.

Gratitude

Thank you, Jesus, for letting me go through the fire, preparing, and purifying me for You had in store for me.

Let me not resist when You want to lead me to something better.

Love, love, and more love.

-Amen.

Just Go with the Big Change

Sometimes in life things happen and you find yourself amidst a major change in your life, a natural disaster, an unexpected transfer, promotion, move, change in relationship status, health-related diagnosis, being a victim of a crime, loss of property, valuables, or investments, receiving a pink slip indicating the loss of your job, or any other variety of major challenges which could rock your world; just go with the big change.

I know, if you’re hanging out with me, you’re a mover and a shaker, you’ve got an incredible amount of things going on, running a pretty tight schedule. You’re growing, expanding, influencing others, and suddenly, without notice, you, too, get surprised by some major shift which could greatly affect your life.

Your first instinct is to resist, to try to push back or to try to control as much of the change as possible as details develop and are revealed to you. Yet, a better way to manage a big change is to find ways to

Let Go and Go with the Flow

You still have a lot of life to manage while all this change is going on, you know trying to micromanage the details would overwhelm you, so instead of trying to control all the details of the change which is unfolding before you, look at this as a divine invitation to further expand your being as you learn to let go and go with the flow.

Letting go of the details can be a frightening idea, especially if you’re like me; if I’m facing a change, I’m likely to start mapping things out, creating T-charts, To Do lists, flow charts and check lists, because, “How else you gonna get things done?”

If your life has a lot of control in it, and for high functioning deal makers, life- and world-changers, there’s a good chance there is a lot of control in your life, because that how you keep faithful to your cause, mission, and get things done.

But then, as you continue to grow and expand, your highest and best in its fullest degree needs no control, not by you anyway. I know, it sounds scary. It’s like you’re piloting a Boeing 787, and your instructions from the tower are to get up and take a seat in First Class and relax while God pilots the plane to its intended destination (which may not be the destination that was charted on your scheduled flight plan).

I recently found myself amidst a major change and I decided to apply the approach of,

Let Go and Let God

Letting go of my inclination to control all the details, just find myself in a particular flow or vibration, and let things unfold in a natural fashion. Very frightening indeed.

One of the advantages of letting go of all the details was that all the other details which I manage on a regular basis, which is a part of my mission and/or ministry, were uninterrupted by what would have been an unexpected and incredibly unsettling major change.

Already a huge advantage.

But then the most amazing things started to happen…

Opportunities appeared at just the right time and place. I mean, I could have never created a plan to create these things showing up, even with all my masterful coordination and doingness. It’s like something more divine was at work and whole series’ of life changes in other people and shifts and changes in environments taking place over months and years, all culminated in an incredible revelation, as everything just fell into place.

And my only job in terms of making all the adjustments necessary to accommodate this big change was to focus only on resisting resistance.

Resist Resistance

All I had to do was to resist resistance and allow things to fall into place, and they did; in ways I could have never imagined, far beyond any way I could have created the outcome with all my combined abilities and great concerted efforts.

Admidst by letting go and going with the flow, all I had to do is to when faced with a decision was to ask myself which option had the least resistance. In other words, to ask,

What’s Easiest?

Whatever appears to be the easiest option, with the least amount of resistance, led me to a higher vibration series of events or options.

The journey, which would have otherwise been tragic, became divinely orchestrated, simply unfolding before me, as if I’d been led, blindfolded, to my highest and best outcome, with little effort and without stress.

I challenge you, when you are next challenged with an unexpected major shift or change, rather than try to manage all the details of this life event, think about initiating a bit of letting go and letting the divine to unfold naturally, to see what happens.

Sounds scary?

Yes.

Worth it?

Indeed.
